At VNACJ Community Health Center, we believe chiropractic care is about far more than just relieving back or neck pain. It plays a vital role in restoring balance, enhancing movement, and supporting optimal function throughout the body. The nervous system is the body’s communication highway. When spinal misalignments or joint dysfunction interfere with this system, it can impact many aspects of health — far beyond the spine itself.
October is National Chiropractic Health Month, a time to highlight the important role chiropractic care plays in whole-body wellness. It’s a great opportunity to learn how chiropractic services can help you feel and function your best. At VNACJ, we view chiropractic care as an essential part of our integrated, patient-centered approach to health. Through gentle adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and movement-based rehabilitation, we help patients improve mobility, reduce inflammation, and support nervous system regulation. Whether it’s helping someone walk without pain, sleep more soundly, or manage stress more effectively, chiropractic care supports the body’s natural ability to heal—without relying on medications or invasive procedures.
To celebrate National Chiropractic Health Month, Dr. Geoffrey Bossio, DC, one of our skilled chiropractors at VNACJ Community Health Center, is answering some of the most frequently asked questions about chiropractic care in this edition of Ask The Provider.
Is chiropractic care safe?
Yes. Chiropractic care is widely recognized as a safe, effective, and non-invasive form of healthcare when performed by a licensed chiropractor. We use controlled, specific adjustments tailored to each patient’s age, condition, and comfort level. Most patients experience relief, improved mobility, and a sense of relaxation following care.
Do I need a referral from a medical doctor?
No referral is needed. Patients can schedule chiropractic visits directly at the VNA Community Health Center. However, we often collaborate closely with primary care and other providers to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive care plan.
Can chiropractic care improve my posture?
Absolutely. Many postural issues stem from joint restrictions, muscle imbalances, or sedentary habits. Chiropractic adjustments, combined with targeted stretching and strengthening exercises, can help restore alignment, reduce strain, and retrain your body to maintain better posture over time.
Is it okay to see a chiropractor if I’m pregnant?
Yes, and in fact, chiropractic care can be very beneficial during pregnancy. It helps relieve common discomforts such as lower back pain, pelvic pressure, and sciatica by improving alignment and joint function. We always use pregnancy-safe techniques and supportive positioning to ensure comfort and safety for both mother and baby.
What’s that cracking sound during an adjustment?
The sound you may hear during an adjustment is called a “joint cavitation.” It’s simply gas (mostly nitrogen and carbon dioxide) being released from the joint as pressure changes—like the sound when you open a soda bottle. It’s harmless and not necessary for an adjustment to be effective. Many adjustments are gentle and make no audible sound at all.
