In observance of June being Men’s Health Month, we asked Eric Tan to share with us some questions that men may want to know about their health – but are often hesitant to ask.
Men’s health encompasses physical and mental well-being and emphasizing both is key to leading a fulfilling life. Historically, men’s mental health has often been overlooked, even though conditions like anxiety and depression are common among all people. Mental health concerns are significant and must be addressed. It’s essential to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength.
Primary care plays a fundamental role in supporting men’s health by integrating mental health services into their care, which offers a convenient and less stigmatizing way to address concerns like stress, anxiety, and depression.
Patients who actively participate through regular primary care visits and address both physical and mental health concerns proactively will significantly improve their quality of life, leading the way for a healthier future.
Male patients ask me these three common mental health questions:
Is it a taboo for men to have anxiety or depression?
Anxiety and depression are a common experience that can affect anyone, regardless of gender or background. It is essential to acknowledge these feelings, and seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Several factors can contribute to these feelings, including stress, life changes, or physical health issues. Exploring possible causes and discussing healthy coping methods can certainly help.
What can I do to manage my stress?
There are many effective methods to manage stress and improve mental well-being, including self-care practices such as regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and a healthy diet, all of which are important for stress management. In addition, exploring relaxing activities, building a strong support system, and connecting with friends and family can also be incredibly helpful.
What are the available resources in treating depression?
Depression is a treatable condition, and professional help is the best way to address it effectively. Resources such as medication therapy, counseling, or support groups are available. Taking care of one’s mental health is just as important as taking care of one’s physical health.
