Welcome to the first edition of “Ask the Provider,” our new blog series where we bring you answers to the most frequently asked questions from patients! In celebration of National Dentist Day, we’re thrilled to launch this series by spotlighting one of our exceptional dentists, Dr. Nilika Gulati, DMD.
How often should I visit the dentist?
Patients should visit the dentist every 6 months, or twice a year, so they can get their teeth cleaned and examined. Patients have different levels of dental health, so some patients need more treatment and have more frequent appointments. You should also go to the dentist if you have a dental emergency- like a broken tooth or pain!
At what age should a child start seeing the dentist?
As soon as the baby gets their first tooth! This way, your dentist can catch early signs of caries. Since the child will likely cry and resist, we won’t be able to get much done but at least it allows the child to become familiar with a dental setting and hopefully they won’t be too scared when they come back for their 6 month exams!
When will my child’s permanent teeth come out?
Permanent teeth come out at different ages. The first permanent tooth will erupt at age 6, and the last ones should come out around age 13. Then, the wisdom teeth come out at around age 17. Children often have years of mixed dentition- meaning they have baby teeth AND permanent teeth at the same time. You can look up a primary and permanent dentition eruption chart on google to see the average ages specific teeth shed/ erupt.
Do I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out?
Wisdom teeth usually come out at around age 17-21. If they come in without causing pain, you do not have to get them removed. If they are impacted, or cause pain or swelling, they should be extracted. Your dentist will be able to take an x-ray to see how the wisdom teeth are coming in. If you need them extracted, it is best to get them taken out at a younger age because the roots may be shorter, the bone may be less dense, the healing process is quicker, and overall the extraction is easier.
